It’s always a head pain to find a good reliable affordable web hosting. If you look at numerous hosts’ websites, you’ll see that every host offers reliable service at cheap cost, but if you check the webmasters forums, you’ll see how many unsatisfied customers search for a new web host. Why? Because there are too many factors that can affect hosting reliability, and there are too many techincal nuances that should be taken into consideration. And even if everything is configured correctly, there may happen force majeure circumstances, that require urgent hi-skilled actions.

If you seem to have found the correct web hosting provider and you feel that you are ready to sign up, listen to my advice, ask the host the following questions:

How many is the company in business? You’d better not trust companies that appeared a year or two ago.

Does the company have its own data-center, or it just resells other companies’ services? Companies with own data-center are more preferable.

Does the company monitor 24×7 website uptime and performance? If no, how can one trust their promises of 99.99% uptime?

Does the company offer daily backups? Daily backups will help you have peace of mind instead of having to manually backup your data.

Does the company have everything that your web site requires? Can the company offer you more than you need? Even if your wordpress only 20 mb of space, are you sure your blog won’t need 3Gb next year? Make sure the host will be able to supply you with enough space and traffic.

I hope this little article will help you find a good web hosting for your project or blog.

Some web designers focus on web design itself to such extent that generate beautiful sites that are impossible to use. Of course a website MUST look good, but it’s not a good idea to make a commercial site overloaded with graphics, flash movies and animations, hiding some necessary basic page elements to corners. What I’m trying to say is, that usability is even more important than nice look, although it doesn’t strike off the latter. Let’s see what’s really important for a commercial website:

1. Page size, load and parsing time – website that take too much time to load and parse frustrate end-users. Think twice when you want to add more jQuery components — do your visitors really need them? In most cases a cleaner site makes more sales that a busier one.

2. Content that is keyword-rich and well-written. No matter how beautiful your website is, if the content is full of typo’s and is written in fact in Indian English, you site visitors will hardly become your customers.

3. Sitemaps. Every website needs a sitemap — no matter if it’s small or large. First, sitemaps help in SEO, second, your visitors will find a sitemap very helpful. Sitemaps are very important even for small sites, as small website tend to grow and you can simply miss the time when sitemap will become essential for your site.

4. Safety. Your clients must feel safe when purchasing at your online store. That is why you must do everything you can to ensure a really safe website.

If you want to know where your visitors come from, how long they stay on your site, which search keywords helped them find your site, what pages they visit and what countries they come from, you need to install website traffic stats code. There are numerous popular stats systems, but perhaps the most popular nowadays is Google Analytics. Let’s see what to look for and how to interpret website traffic statistics.

1. How many people come to my site? How many pages do they browse?

2 very important traffic characteristics are: the number of visitors and number of visited pages. The number of visited pages is also a larger number than number of visitors, since every visitor usualy serfes through several pages.

2. What are the sources of my traffic?

It’s very important to control where you visitors come from: if your online store ships only to continental US, but most of your visitors come from OK, you definitely do something wrong

It’s also important to check what search phrases use your visitors — it will give you an idea about what keywords should be selected for SEO promotion.

3. What are the most visited pages?

Compare your articles performance, see what interests your visitors, don’t be indifferent

Hello my dear readers. With this article I’m starting a series of educational posts related to CSS and web design. The first article is about an item that is somehow between design and content: I am talking about the ‘Content’ CSS property. It’s ambiguity comes from the fact, that CSS is developed to be a means of design, but the ‘content’ property deals with the content. But I’m not going to start a holywar here. We, SEO-professional, think in a different dimension. And the ‘Content’ property for us – is a simple way of adding a text that won’t be indexed by search engines.

First, how it’s used. You need to remember, that the ‘Content’ property can be used only with the following pseudo-elements:

:before

:after

Just a short example:

.my_name:before {content: “Mr. “;}

Use it with this HTML:

<div><span class=”my_name”>Alex Johnson</span></div>

As a result, the browser will show:

Mr. Alex Johnson

Perhaps your question is, which browsers support this trick? Don’t worry, according to the specs, ALL popular browsers work nicely with the ‘Content’ property:

Firefox 3+

Internet Explorer 8+

Chrome 3+

Opera 10+

Safari 3+

I hope you liked my first article.
